Pastel blue, green, and peach minded guide card about Reddit doomscrolling

Reddit may be where you find a precise answer from someone who solved the same obscure problem five years ago. It may also be where one useful answer turns into 40 minutes of arguments, alarming headlines, and communities you never chose to follow.

That combination makes “just delete Reddit” unsatisfying advice. The useful part and the endless part live in the same app.

One practical approach is to make Reddit smaller: fewer recommendations, fewer prompts, fewer open-ended feeds, and clearer reasons to visit. You keep the communities that add value while narrowing the places you browse.

First, Decide What Reddit Is For

Before changing settings, finish this sentence:

Reddit is useful to me for ________.

Your answer might be troubleshooting, a hobby, a local community, support from people with similar experiences, or following a specific topic. Write down the three to five communities that serve that purpose.

Use this list as a filter. A post can be interesting without belonging in the version of Reddit you want to keep. The goal is not to prove that everything outside your list is bad; it is to stop letting every interesting thing compete equally for your attention.

1. Turn Off Home Feed Recommendations

Reddit’s Home feed can include recommended posts from communities you have not joined. Those recommendations create new paths long after you have caught up with the communities you chose.

On Reddit.com

  1. Open Settings → Preferences.
  2. Find Show recommendations in home feed.
  3. Turn the setting off.

On Android or iPhone

  1. Open Reddit’s Settings.
  2. Choose your account settings.
  3. Scroll to Personalized Recommendations.
  4. Turn off Enable home feed recommendations.

Menu names can move as Reddit updates its apps. The current Reddit Help instructions use those labels, so search Settings for “recommendations” if the path looks different.

This change does not remove posts from communities you joined. It narrows Home toward choices you already made.

2. Mute Communities That Hijack the Feed

Some communities repeatedly pull you into outrage, anxiety, comparison, or arguments even though you never seek them out deliberately. Muting removes their posts from notifications, the entire Home feed—including recommendations—and the Popular feed. This also removes ordinary Home posts from a community you have joined.

On reddit.com, open a community page, select the overflow menu, and choose Mute. In the mobile app, you can mute from a community page or from a post in the Popular feed. Reddit also lets you manage muted communities from Settings → Preferences → Muted communities on the web or Account settings → Manage muted communities in its mobile apps.

On a recommendation, choose Show fewer posts like this. Reddit says this stops future suggestions from that community. In the mobile app, Reddit then provides an additional option to mute the community; on the web, the documented recommendation action ends after Show fewer posts like this.

Mute based on your response, not on whether the community sounds respectable. If a serious news community reliably sends you into a late-night spiral, it can be a poor fit for your Home feed even when the reporting matters.

A feed you did not open cannot consume your evening. Notifications reopen the choice throughout the day.

Reddit categorizes trending posts under recommendation notifications. To turn them off:

On Reddit.com

  1. Open Settings → Notifications.
  2. Scroll to Recommendations.
  3. Turn off Trending Posts.

On Android or iPhone

  1. Open Reddit Settings and choose your account.
  2. Tap Manage Notifications.
  3. Scroll to Recommendations.
  4. Turn off Trending posts.

Review the surrounding recommendation toggles while you are there. Keep direct messages, replies, or activity you genuinely want, and disable recommendation alerts you do not want to receive.

Home can be curated. Popular is built for breadth. It can be useful when you deliberately want a broad snapshot, but it is a poor default when you want to check one interest and leave. Reddit removed r/all entry points from its current apps and website in April 2026 and redirects its links to Home; r/all remains available through old.reddit.com.

Replace it with a smaller entry point:

  • bookmark the community you visit for a specific purpose
  • open Reddit through a search result or saved thread
  • favorite a few useful communities
  • group related communities in a Custom Feed
  • use a direct message or notification only when it comes from a person

A Custom Feed can combine, for example, three gardening communities without mixing in news, celebrity drama, and whatever is popular across the entire site. It is still a feed, but its boundaries come from you.

5. Give the Session an End Before It Starts

“Check Reddit” has no finish line. Use a task that does:

  • “Look for an answer to this error message.”
  • “Read the top five posts in my local community.”
  • “Check replies to the question I posted.”
  • “Spend ten minutes in my woodworking feed.”
  • “Save one useful answer, then close Reddit.”

For browsing sessions, choose both a duration and a stopping event. A timer can ring while your hand keeps scrolling. “Ten minutes or five posts, whichever comes first” gives you a visible endpoint inside the feed.

If you find something you want to read carefully, save it and leave the feed. Reading one selected thread is a different activity from scanning an endless sequence of possible threads.

6. Add Friction Before You Reach Reddit’s Feed

Settings inside Reddit only help after you arrive. If your thumb opens the app whenever work becomes uncomfortable or a browser tab goes quiet, intervene at the moment of entry.

Use the level of friction that fits the situation:

  • App or site timer: good for a firm daily ceiling
  • Scheduled block: good for work, study, meals, or bedtime
  • Physical distance: good when you need a truly uninterrupted period
  • Mindful pause: good when you still need Reddit but open it without deciding

minded can add that pause as you enter Reddit on Android or Chrome. Choose Reddit as an app or site you want to use more intentionally, then name your purpose or select a short duration before continuing to its feed. On Android 10 and later, the current flow requires minded’s accessibility service to observe app and window changes and Display over other apps to show the prompt; optional Usage Access validates detection and calculates usage time. Review the complete permission and platform-storage disclosure. The prompt asks for your intent before continuing; it does not make Reddit inaccessible.

7. Separate News From Community

Reddit can blur two different needs: I want to talk with people who share an interest and I need to know what is happening everywhere right now. The second need has no natural completion point, especially during a developing story.

If news drives your Reddit doomscrolling:

  1. Remove news communities from Home or move them to a separate Custom Feed.
  2. Check that feed during one or two planned news windows.
  3. Prefer a small number of reporting sources over repeated reaction threads.
  4. Leave when you can state what changed since your last check.

If ten posts repeat the same event with different outrage attached, each additional post may offer diminishing informational value. Our content diet guide goes deeper into staying informed without carrying the entire feed around all day.

8. Replace the Automatic Check

Reddit often fills transitions: code compiling, a meeting ending early, waiting for transport, or avoiding the first difficult step of a task. Removing the app does not remove those moments.

Choose a replacement that matches the gap:

  • write down the next work step while something loads
  • read one article you already saved
  • stand up and get water
  • message a friend directly
  • keep a small offline puzzle nearby
  • do nothing for one minute

The replacement does not need to be impressive. It only needs to be easier to choose than reopening Reddit.

A 10-Minute Reddit Reset

For the smallest useful setup, do this:

  1. Write down the five communities you want Reddit to be for.
  2. Turn off Home feed recommendations.
  3. Mute three communities that reliably derail you.
  4. Turn off Trending posts and other recommendation notifications.
  5. Bookmark one community or Custom Feed as your new entry point.
  6. Set a daily limit or add a pause before Reddit opens.
  7. Choose one replacement for the moments when you check automatically.

Do not spend an hour perfecting every preference. The point of the reset is to leave Reddit sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Turn Off Reddit Recommendations?

On reddit.com, open Preferences and turn off Show recommendations in home feed. In the Android or iPhone app, open your account settings, find Personalized Recommendations, and turn off Enable home feed recommendations. Labels may vary as the interface changes.

Can I Block Reddit Without Losing Access Completely?

Yes. Use a scheduled block during focus periods, a daily app or site timer, or a pause before opening Reddit. Bookmark useful communities so deliberate access remains easy while automatic access becomes less convenient.

Does Muting a Community Unsubscribe Me?

Muting controls where that community’s content appears; it is different from leaving a community. Reddit says opting in to notifications from a muted community removes it from the muted list, so review that setting if its posts return.

Should I Delete Reddit?

Delete it if the useful value is small or you want a clean break. If Reddit solves real problems for you, first try narrowing it to chosen communities, removing recommendations, and entering with a specific task. You can also remove the mobile app and keep intentional access on desktop.

Why Do I Move to Another Feed After Blocking Reddit?

A still-present cue—boredom, avoidance, anxiety, or the desire for novelty—may be one explanation. Some people substitute another feed, so pair the boundary with a replacement that addresses the same moment.

Make Reddit a Tool Again

The best version of Reddit is not necessarily the smallest number on a screen-time report. It is the version where you find the answer, visit the community, or have the conversation you chose—then leave.

Turn down the recommendations, silence the invitations, and stop entering through the widest possible feed. Keep the part that helps. Put a boundary around the part that does not.
